Veterans Day

Thursday is Veterans Day. Unlike most holidays Veterans Day is not marked by big store sales or family celebrations. Veterans Day is instead celebrated with solemn ceremonies attended mostly by those who have experienced war, the families and survivors of those who went to war, and occasionally by an important national or local politician. Unfortunately, many American’s see this day as just another day off from work or maybe as an inconvenience due to the closing of government buildings. They don’t realize the importance of honoring those who have sacrificed so that they can be free to celebrate or not celebrate this holiday.

As for me, I will take a moment tomorrow to thank a vet for their service. I will also take some time to think about my Grandpa Charles who served in Europe in World War II, my Grandpa Howard who served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, and my Dad who also served in Vietnam. I know that I am free only because of their sacrifices and I am eternally thankful.

I appreciated your posting for Veterans Day. I would encourage you to not talk about the Americans who do not celebrate this important day, but to educate them more.

Yesterday, I helped out at my child school assembly about Veterans Day. It only took one hour out of my day.

Thanks for the feedback. I hope my post didn't come off as a criticism of those who do not recognize the date. I was just trying to express my disappointment that there isn't more recognition.

Good to hear that you helped out. Once my kids our in school I would like to help to organize Veterans Day events.
